Chosui was a Japanese poet born in 1701 to a local governor in Chiba. As a monk and artist, he gained prominence during the Edo Period. Chosui’s work was considered innovative for his well received efforts during a peak of the public embrace of the arts within Japan. As a haiku master, Chosui mentored his highly gifted disciple, Shirao, and influenced many with his craft before he passed away in 1769.
