Masaoka Shiki was one of the most prominent haiku masters of the Meiji period within Japan. Considered one of the four haiku masters, Shiki’s work as a literary critic, poet, and author helped to shape the development of haiku and tanka. Though his life was brief (he passed away in his mid thirties,) Shiki’s craft as a nineteenth century theorist and author contributed to the creation of the prominent journal Hototogisu .
